Language revitalization, education, and community capacity building

Aloha mai - welcome! I am a linguistics PhD student at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, where my research lies at the intersection of endangered language documentation, revitalization pedagogy, and computational linguistics. I am particularly interested in developing educational resources and computational platforms to facilitate community-driven language documentation and reclamation. My other research interests include community radio as a vehicle for revitalization, polysynthetic morphology, and education for women and girls in the developing world. I have served as the senior co-director of the Language Documentation Training Center, and I currently work on language documentation and revitalization projects in North America, South Asia, and Oceania.

My personal and professional goals extend beyond language documentation and revitalization. Linguistic justice is inextricably tied to other sectors of development, such as education, public health, and climate resilience; and empowerment in one domain cannot be achieved in isolation. Drawing upon an interdisciplinary background that spans education, journalism, medical engineering, and software development, I hope to build intersectional, holistic capacity among minoritized and indigenous communities.

When I am not conducting research, I work as a classical radio host at Hawaiʻi Public Radio and as a chemistry and physics teacher at ʻIolani School in Honolulu. I enjoy singing, acting, playing the violin, outrigger canoeing, Ms. Frizzle dresses, dad jokes, and guinea pigs. Mahalo for visiting!

Hōʻoia ʻĀina — Land Acknowledgement

The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa strives to be a Native Hawaiian Place of Learning. As a settler who lives and works on lands that were ceded under duress, I am committed to amplifying Indigenous voices and upholding the values of aloha ʻāina.
